SUMMER 2025
Ted Smith
Adelie Penguin
Taken in the Southern Ocean. I lay flat on the bottom of a Zodiac craft waiting for the bird to break the surface. Needless to say, my 'delete' file was significant!
White-tailed Eagle
The White-tailed and Steller's Eagles in Hokkaido, Northern Japan are worth a trip for any wildlife photographer and I shot thousands of images. I love the casual 'one handed' technique and the look of absolute focus in the eagle's eye.
Plum-headed Parakeet
Taken in Central India I was amused to see these parakeets stealing ears of corn. Full of colour and character, a magical moment.
Malabar Pied Hornbills
An image from Sri Lanka. The pair crept closer and closer and then interlocked their bills in an extraordinary act of courtship. An unforgettable encounter.
Black-headed Weaver
Weaver birds build brilliant nests and are always busy with their upkeep, constantly coming and going and with little interest in a photographer sitting just a few feet away.
Spot-billed Pelican
Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination for wildlife photography. These huge pelicans had such aerial mastery.
Short-eared Owl
One of my favourite birds. This was taken near Barbary Castle in Wiltshire, England. In sub-zero temperatures the owl paid no attention to me as it hunted close by. I used a slow shutter speed in an attempt to capture motion in the image through wing blur.
Grey-crowned Crane
I love Africa and the symmetry of these two magnificent birds caught my eye. They went on to land in perfect harmony.
Ted Smith
Ted Smith has been an active birder for more than fifty years, at first in the North East corner of England, then across the whole of the United Kingdom, and ultimately across every continent on the planet. His interest in photography, which became a passion, began ten years ago. He seeks to capture real moments in time, moments that tell a story. He strives to produce images that are as close as possible to his living memory of the event. As such, he uses little post-editing, preferring to do most of the work in-camera. Inspired by all wildlife, particularly birds in flight, he hopes to share that sense of wonder through his photographs. More of his work can be seen on Instagram @tedsmith8783 or on Flickr.
