Triolet

by EMILY ALTA HOCKADAY

Outside the cottage, in the shrub, a deer sits
with fawn, eating beach plums and hiding
from the midday sun, which is hot but keeps mosquitoes
outside the cottage in the shrub. A deer sits,
complacent; it owns this island. When the beachgoers
are gone, the bright umbrellas packed, litter thrown
outside the cottage—in the shrub, a deer will sit,
with fawn, eating beach plums unhidden.
